Reed, founded in 1909, is a private, multipurpose college. The University of Montana, founded in 1893, is a comprehensive public institution. Beyond academic programs, students select the University of Montana for its location and outdoor recreation opportunities. Campus recreation and outdoor programs enable students to take advantage of unique opportunities in the wilderness. Strong academic programs, particularly forestry and wildlife biology, are supported by a 29,000-acre experimental forest as well as two working ranches. The school has an exceptional environmental studies program. Its 220-acre campus is located in Missoula, west of Great Falls.
