The Catholic University of America, founded in 1887, is a church-affiliated institution. It was established by American Catholic bishops as a graduate and research center for the study of "all branches of literature and science, both sacred and profane." Pope Leo XIII approved the plan to found CUA, making it the only national Catholic center of learning in the United States with a papal charter. The university began offering undergraduate programs in 1904.
